Car seats classification

How can you be sure that you are choosing the right car seat for your child ?

Your car seat should adapt to your child’s body, be compatible with your vehicle and be comfortable for your child.
Two sets of regulations apply to car-seats :

  • European standard ECE R44/04
  • European standard ECE R129 (i-Size) applicable since July 2013, This standard is based around on the Isofix attachment system.

Before anything else, the seat must be certified. Labels on the attachment systems guarantee that they comply with applicable European safety standards. How to read these labels ?

  • The term “ universal ”

refers to a system which can be used in all vehicles. On the other hand, the term “non universal” means that it cannot be used in certain vehicles.

  • The group

is a European certification classification. There are 5 of these, certain systems may cover more than one group.

  • The letter “ E ”

indicates that the product is certified.

  • The code (number or letter)

following the “E” indicates the European country in which the certification was awarded. This is evidently recognised by all European countries.

In all cases, rear-seats are the safest seats in a vehicle interior, they are less exposed to danger than the front seats. Select a model suited to the height and weight of your child to guarantee that your car-seat will be suitable.

Which installation type is best for your vehicle ?

Child car-seats can be attached using either Isofix anchor points or fitted using the vehicle’s safety belts. We would like to remind you that it is absolutely essential that your car-seat is correctly installed.

The Isofix system is an installation method which involves fitting the 2 attachments directly to your vehicle (important: not all vehicles have Isofix anchor points).

Installation using seatbelts is very common and suitable for all types of vehicles. To avoid incorrect use, ensure that your car-seat is correctly installed.

The key issues of your car seat

    • If your Group 0 car seat is used on the front passenger seat, ensure that the passenger seat airbag is deactivated.

Do not install a rear-facing car seat  on a front seat fitted with an airbag.

    • Seatbelt attachment: important things to know :
On Renolux car seats, the areas for the passage of the vehicle’s seatbelt are identified by coloured parts :
      BLUE for rear-facing installation
      RED for forward-facing installation
  • Ensure that the safety harness straps are not twisted, that they are snugly placed against the child’s bodies at the correct height :
contentThe straps should pass above but near to the shoulders.
Due to the different thickness of clothing, the harness should be readjusted for every trip. Installation with the car seatbelt: always push the car-seat against the seat bench, and then tighten the seatbelt as much as possible. Our car-seats have safety tensioner systems to ensure optimal seatbelt tension, and that the seat is firmly fitted to the seat-bench. If you can fit three fingers between the belt and your child’s shoulder there is a risk of ejection.
  • The safety buckle must be correctly locked.

imgWhen closing the harness you should always hear a “click” that confirms that it is correctly locked in place. The buckle should be just above the child’s thighs supporting the hips and not the stomach.

  • Correctly adjust the car-seat’s head rest to suit the height of your child.img2The child’s head must be supported at all times. An adjustable head-rest can be adjusted to suit the height of your child.
  • Compare the different levels of comfort offered by child safety seats :For calm and safe driving, ensure that your child is comfortably seated by selecting comfortable cushioned child-seats.

When should you switch your car seat to the next group ?

For the safety and comfort of your child, do not change to another child-seat group too early. Carefully compare the height, weight and age of your child with the information provided in the user manual. For optimal safety, install the child seat in a rear-facing position as long as possible, until at least 15 months.

img5As soon as your baby’s head is higher than the back-rest of the car seat,
it is time to switch to a Group 0+/1 car seat.

As soon as your child’s shoulder is higher than the harness strap in its highest setting,
it is time to fit a car seat from a higher group.

Do not stop using child-seats too early:
Above 135 cm and/or 36 kg, the use of a car seat is no longer compulsory. Renolux recommends that you continue using a car seat with back rest up to around 10 years.

Do not buy a used car seat (second-hand shop, specialized web-sites)
These may not conform to current safety standards or be less safe (worn straps, defective buckle). They may also have hidden defects and may no longer meet certain or all safety standards. Never use a child safety seat if you do not know its origin or ho wit has been used.

Try out the car seat before purchasing
Do not hesitate to request an installation demonstration on your vehicle.
